10 years ago, when it became apparent that our family’s 19th century orchard in Lakewood, CO would be razed to make way for development, Gail Klapper together with apple expert Karl Kister, came up with a radical plan. With help from the Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project, scion wood from the heirloom apple trees was harvested and grafted onto baby trees. The grafted trees are now bearing fruit, some of which is unique in the world. We have fuji and gala trees as well, which offer robust harvests as the new trees continue to grow.
